Pietà Hotspurs make history as inaugural BOV Challenge Cup champions

In front of a packed Centenary Stadium, Pietà Hotspurs defied all odds to be crowned the first-ever BOV Challenge Cup champions, defeating newly crowned league winners Valletta 1-0 in a hard-fought encounter. It was a tactical masterclass from coach Manuel Caruana, whose side showed sheer determination and clinical counterattacking football to overcome the Lilywhites. Valletta, meanwhile, were left lamenting their missed opportunities.

Pietà started the match with intent, creating early chances through Felippe Stelmach and Zean Leonardi, although neither managed to hit the target. Valletta had a golden opportunity to take the lead when James Scicluna beat the offside trap, but with only goalkeeper Reeves Cini to beat, his shot crashed against the crossbar.

Despite Valletta’s growing pressure, Pietà continued to threaten from distance, with Emmanuel Bio forcing a smart save from Timothy Aquilina in the 25th minute with a powerful long-range effort.

The pivotal moment came ten minutes into the second half. Pietà launched a swift counterattack, with Jeremy Micallef surging forward and delivering a pinpoint cross for Kian Leonardi, who nodded home from close range to send the Pietà fans into raptures.

As Pietà retreated to defend their slender advantage, Valletta pushed men forward in search of an equaliser. Brandon Paiber came agonizingly close with a superb free kick that rattled the crossbar and bounced away.

Pietà nearly doubled their lead nine minutes from time when Kian Leonardi’s close-range effort was brilliantly saved by Aquilina. In the frantic final minutes, Valletta threw everything at Pietà, but a disciplined and resilient defensive performance saw the Hotspurs hold on to secure a historic and memorable triumph.
