Earlier today, the Times of Malta published a story about Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa taking action against a Police officer accused of sexual harassing two of his colleagues. Times of Malta did not publish the name of the accused individual, but he happens to be a brother of an employee at the Opposition’s TV channel, NET TV.
Sources that spoke to The Maltese Herald have told us that the Police Commissioner is being motivated by his political bias on this particular case. Although we can not verify the details, this is not the first time that the Police Commissioner is being accused of using double standards with his subordinates.
Separately, and since early in 2024, two separate sources from the Police have been informing The Maltese Herald that the Police Commissioner refused to take action on several of his most trusted officers and subordinates in relation to their alleged cases of domestic violence and the handling of suspects. These reports have been made to The Maltese Herald multiple times across 2024 and even this year, but we did not verify them. A police officer also accused of sexual harassment in the workplace has been recently transferred but has not been charged or arraigned in Court.
Various sources from the Police have consistently accused the Police Commissioner of favouritism and lack of meritocracy which they claim is also reflected in the inconsistent way he handles disciplinary proceedings and charges against his subordinates. The Police officers also cite a case on one of their colleagues who they say has been unfairly charged on the accusation of mishandling his suspects.
