Kai-Ji Adam Lo, a Canadian resident from Vancouver has been charged with eight counts of murder after ramming down and killing up to 11 individuals with an SUV celebrating Lapu Lapu Day in downtown Vancouver. Lapu Lapu Day is a traditional Filipino cultural festival and in Vancouver usually draws crowds of up to 100,000 people.
The Vancouver Police stated that they do not suspect terrorism but believe the incident was a premeditated murder. They described the suspect as mentally challenged and noted that additional charges may be filed. The Vancouver Police described Saturday as the darkest day in Vancouver’s history and also appealed to respect the privacy of the victims.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a public statement that he and all Canadians are joining in mourning with the Canadian-Filipino community over this tragic loss.
