Manfred Weber has been re-elected as the President of the European People’s Party at the EPP congress in Valencia, which was also attended by EU dignitaries such as Commissioner President Ursula von der Leyen and Parliament President Roberta Metsola: both members of the EPP. Manfred Weber has been re-elected for a second three-year term as head of the EPP.
Manfred Weber ran for the leadership of the EPP uncontested. The EPP is the biggest political grouping the European Parliament with 182 seats out of a total of 720 seats in parliament.ย It has 11 EU Commissioners in total, including the Commissioner President out of 27 commissioners and 11 heads of government out of 27 EU member states.
The EPP congress was characterised by the historic blackouts in Spain on the previous day. European Commissioner President Ursula von der Leyen pledged her support for Spain to enhance its “preparedness”. Freidrich Merz prioritised the issue of defence in his main speech. Opposition Leader Bernard Grech congratulated Weber for his new term.
Opposition Leader Bernard Grech was also present at the congress.
