Socialists around the world celebrate May Day

May Day unfolded with its usual mix of protests, riots, and political demonstrations around the world. Below are selected images and footage sourced from public sources.

The 1st of May, known globally as Labour Day or May Day, is an official public holiday in most countries, with notable exceptions such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Australia. Nevertheless, protests and demonstrations were still held across both the US and the UK.

May Day began to be observed following the nationwide strikes that started on May 1, 1886, and the subsequent Haymarket riots in Chicago. These events became a turning point in the labor movement and helped pave the way for the eight-hour working day.

Maltaโ€™s first workersโ€™ riot took place in the summer of 1899 at Coal Wharf, Marsa, and led to the introduction of the countryโ€™s first minimum wage.

The Labour Party also held its celebrations in Valletta.
