European Union officials including Parliament President Roberta Metsola and Commissioner President Ursula von der Leyen have so far remained silent on the Israeli attack against the Freedom Flotilla “Conscience”. EU Commissioner Glenn Micallef released a statement condemning the attack as an attack on children and a blatant violation of international law. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has called for an independent investigation.
The Israeli government has not acknowledged or denied the attack. The attack by Israel was likely conducted by remotely-controlled drones that dropped grenades or small bombs.
Prime Minister Robert Abela did not yet announce that an attack took place saying it needs to be determined first, but a Maltese marine surveyor boarded the vessel yesterday. Two patrol boats of the Armed Forces of Malta are patrolling the area. The Prime Minister has also announced that Malta is offering to fund and conduct repairs for the vessel on-site.
Separately, Times of Malta is reporting that Israel demanded the Maltese government not to grant entry for the Freedom Flotilla vessel. The vessel, “Conscience”, was preparing to enter Malta’s port before it was attacked. An Israel reconnaissance warplane also circulated the area hours before the attack took place.
