UPDATED: Friedrich Merz elected Chancellor of Germany

UPDATED: Friedrich Merz has been elected Chancellor of Germany in the second round of voting with 325 votes. He required 316 votes to get elected.

CDU leader Friedrich Merz has failed to get elected as Germany’s Chancellor after a rebellious faction from the SPD refused to vote for him. He received only 310 of the 316 votes needed from the 630-seat German parliament, the Bundestag, to be elected Chancellor.

This is the first time in history that a German Chancellor failed to be approved by Parliament. A second round is expected and Mer is expected to be voted in as Chancellor. The CDU, backed by its Bavarian ally, CSU, won up to 29% of the vote in the last elections followed by the SPD with 20% of the vote. The CDU and the SPD plan to form a coalition government but an SPD faction has currently blocked this deal.

The CDU/CSU currently hold 208 seats, the far-right AFD 152 seats and the SPD 120 seats. The Greens hold 90 seats Die Linke 64 and South Schleswig Voters’ Association one seat.
