German Chancellor Friedrich Merz met President Donald Trump at the White House and made a strong case for the Untied States to put pressure on Russia and back Ukraine. The German Chancellor appealed to the US President to increase sanctions and additional measures which could put more pressure on Russia.
The Chancellor said that the United States played a strong role in the liberation of Europe in the Second World War, and once again should play a strong role by using its strength to put pressure on Russia to make peace with Ukraine. Chancellor Merz is upping the support for Ukraine in Europe and has recently removed range-limitations that were previously imposed on Ukraine over its European weapons.
During his campaign trail, the German Chancellor also promised to provide Ukraine with long-range Taurus missiles, but no confirmation has been made yet of any actual deliveries. Germany is however massively increasing defence expenditureย and has also applied for the ReArm Europe schemes to exempt defence spending from EU budget regulations.
Merz and Trump also discussed the ongoing trade dispute between the US and the EU, with a looming deadline of July 9 to reach a deal before President Trump imposes 50% tariffs on EU products imported into the United States.
In a surprising gesture, the German Chancellor presented President Trump with a copy of his grandfather Friedrich Trumpโs German birth certificate: a symbolic act reminding him that his ancestors were also immigrants.
This is the first time the German Chancellor met with President Trump since he entered office.
