German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that Germany, France, and the UK have lifted range restrictions on Western weapons supplied to Ukraine. Chancellor Merz previously campaigned in the German elections on the proposal that Germany should provide long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine.
The announcement comes following the deployment of up to 4,800 German troops to Lithuania. This the first time since the Second World War that a contingent of German troops are bordering Russia. In late 2024, Germany deployed six Eurofighter Typhon Jets at the Lielvārde Air Base in Latvia.
The German Chancellor also expects for the war in Ukraine to drag longer than expected if a peace deal is not struck soon. However the German Chancellor and his French and British counterparts, still have to follow through their ultimatum to Russia on increasing sanctions after Russia has failed to accept a 30-day ceasefire with Ukraine.
