The Maltese team, sponsored by the Arts Council to participate in the London Design Biennale, has won the event’s Best Design Award with their exhibition titled “Urna”. The exhibition features a sculpture of an urn crafted from Maltese limestone, which will also serve as a prototype for the design of actual urns to be used in Malta.
The artistic team intends to create urns designed to hold the remains of an entire family, with the urns intended to be stored in a disused quarry that serves as a cemetery.
The exhibition was created by artist Andrew Borg Wirth, architect Anthony Bonnici, Thomas Mifsud, Ebejer Bonnici, Stephanie Sant and Matthew Attard Navarro. Two foreigners were also part of the team and these were French photographer Anne Immelรฉ and Cypriot architect Tanil Raif.
This was the fifth edition of the London Design Biennale and hosted up to ย 40 global pavilions at Somerset House. The London Design Biennale is organised by the same team of the London Design Festival and was curated by Samuel Ross.
