Alex Borg asked to apologise by the Standards Commissioner

Opposition MP Alex Borg has been asked to apologise by the Commissioner for Standards in Public Life after being found guilty of lying about the Fort Chambray project to justify his vote in the Public Accounts Committee. Alex Borg had claimed that the private concessionaires of Fort Chambray were responsible for the restoration of the fort, but the contract actually stipulated that this was the government’s obligation.

The Commissioner stated that, that code of ethics for MPs does not oblige them to be truthful, but it does oblige them to behave in a dignified manner in parliament. The Commissioner ruled that Alex Borg’s behaviour was undignified when he lied to justify the vote in favour of the project in the Public Accounts Committee. You can red the full decision here.

Alex Borg frequently takes positions in favour of the government and occasionally criticises activists, protesters and also other opposition figures. He was also criticised for his lies abour Fort Chambray by NGOs which opposed the handover of Fort Chambray to property developers.

The complaint against Alex Borg was filed by Labour Party election candidate Jesmond Bonello.
