The Labour government is to introduce euthanasia as a medical service: press conference announced for consultation process

The Department of Information has notified the press of a press conference to be held by the Parliamentary Secretary for Equality and Reforms, Rebecca Buttigieg, to announce a public consultation process on proposed euthanasia legislation. However, Labour Party sources have informed The Maltese Herald that the party intends to pass legislation through Parliament that would introduce euthanasia as a medical service.

Euthanasia as a medical service is typically offered to patients with terminal illnesses who are experiencing severe physical pain and unbearable suffering. The practice became more controversial in Canada when it was extended to include non-terminally ill patients. The Labour Party’s electoral manifesto calls for a discussion on euthanasia or voluntary assisted death.

This is a developing story.
