National Security to become an electoral issue for the 2027 general election

National security has never been an issue in the electoral manifestos of local political parties but this may very well change in the upcoming general election in 2027. As the Labour government remains silent over Israel’s attack on the Freedom Flotilla vessel “Conscience”, it risks making another mockery of Malta’s national security. This is not an incident that should be swept under the carpet and used for rhetorical partisan purposes.

Clearly, the Prime Minister and the government are still unable to find their footing and their position on the matter, but as their silence is prolonged the chance to address the issue will decrease drastically. It is definitely not in our security interest to allow Israel to get away with its aggressive and belligerent actions in our borders.

Under these circumstances, the Prime Minister is obliged to hold an extraordinary press conference, with the whole cabinet behind him, explain the situation in full and take a position defending Malta’s sovereignty. The Labour government is failing the country in national security: one of the essential elements for the foundations of our state. However, it now risks to fail in one of its most important missions, that is our national sovereignty.

The Nationalist Party will have the opportunity to point out that all the virtuous rhetoric against Eropean defence is defunct and incongruent to Malta’s reality of today. Moreover, if Labour keeps silent on “Conscience” incident, the Nationalist Party will be in an easier position to project itself as the party which will uncompromisingly defend our sovereignty and borders in the international arena.

It will be incredibly ironic, and also an existential failure for the Nationalist Party if it will be unable to fulfill its mission as the “nationalist party” of local politics.
