Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, gave a speech to the Spanish parliament yesterday in which he defended Spain’s efforts to ensure the security of its infrastructure and and its citizens against threats of natural disasters, climate change, and even security and exterior threats. Spain’s Prime Minister said that despite the increase in defence spending to ensure Spain’s security from external threats, social spending has never been reduced as a result and the government’s spending on social projects is actually increasing.
Last month, the Spanish government announced it will increase its defence spending from 1.4% of its GDP to 2% of its GDP with up to €10.471 billion in defence spending for 2025. The Spanish Premier made the announcement last month by stating that defence spending was going to increase “without raising taxes, without touching one cent of the investment in the welfare state and without incurring a greater public deficit.” Spain hasn’t yet opted to trigger its national emergency clause to exempt it from deficit regulations over its defence spending.
With reference to the historic blackout on the 28th of April, the Spanish Prime Minister defended green energy, saying that Spain’s route to choose green energy was not for any ideological, economic or obscure interest but simply for being the best and most ideal energy option. The historic blackout is still being investigated but experts state that likely cause was the lack of equipment and organisation that is required to moderate the oscillating frequency and voltage of the grid that comes from renewable-energy sources.
