A planned upcoming NATO Summit in the Hague this week between the 24th and 25th June is going to start on the wrong foot with many world leaders making statements and announcements that won’t necessarily be welcomed by their allies.
On one hand, President Donald Trump wants to exclude Ukraine from the summit, avoid speaking about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and instead focus exclusively on China. NATO was founded in 1949 specifically to counter the potential threat of a Russian/Soviet invasion of Western Europe.
Meanwhile, Spain’s Premier Pedro Sanchez has made a statement saying that Spain won’t be hitting its 5% NATO expenditure target. Spain had previously agreed with its allied NATO partners to reach a 5% expenditure target on defence. The Spanish government has actually increased defence expenditure from 1.4% to 2% and strongly defended this decision saying that this increase has not affected social security and welfare payments.
However, the Spanish Premier also said that Spain is committed to uphold NATO’s Article 5 and all its obligations within the alliance.
