Yesterday, as national leaders convened at The Hauge in The Netherlands for a NATO summit, Russia bombed a civilian train with a ballistic missile in the city of Dnipro. The attack left up to 17 people killed and up to 280 injured.
The attack also came as President Donald Trump gave comments to journalists while he was on his way to The Netherlands on Air Force One and showed great reluctance to commit to condemn Russia at the NATO summit. Last year at NATO’s summit in Washington, NATO released a very strong and extensive statement against Russia highlighting the security risks it poses to Europe including by disinformation and hybrid warfare.
The attacks and frequency of attacks against Ukrainian civilians by Russia have increased by at least 50% since President Donald Trump entered office. President Trump also justified Russia’s attacks against Ukrainian civilians following Ukraine’s attack against Russia’s startegic nuclear bombers.
During the NATO Summit President Trump is pushing European NATO allies to raise their defence expenditure to 5%. Spain is objecting to this proposal and as a result is effectively jeapordising the plan to raise the 5% target for all of NATO’s member, given that NATO works with a system of unanimous consensus and never by exceptions.
NATO Secretary-General is saying that President Trump has convinced all other NATO members to raise their defence spending to 5%. The below text messages by Mark Rutte to Donald Trump were published by Rutte himself. The NATO summit is ongoing.
