Pope Leone XIV: Key facts about the newly elected Pontiff

The Catholic Church has a new leader: Pope Leone XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, elected on on 8th May, following the conclave of 133 cardinal electors. His election marks a historic moment for the Church – and for the United States – as he becomes the first American and the first Augustinian to assume the papacy.

Academic and Religious Formation

Pope Leone XIV began his studies in the United States and entered the Augustinian novitiate in Saint Louis. He continued his theological education in Chicago before being sent to Rome at the age of 27, where he pursued studies in canon law and was ordained a priest.

Missionary and Episcopal Service

His deep and long-standing ties to Peru began in 1985 when he joined an Augustinian mission in Chulucanas, later moving to another mission in Trujillo. His work in Latin America spanned decades, eventually leading to his appointment as Bishop of Chiclayo in 2015. On 30th January 2023, he was elevated to Archbishop.ย ย Pope Francis created him Cardinal in the Consistory on 30th September of that year andย  assigned him the Diaconate of Saint Monica. He officially took possession of it on 28th January, 2024.

A New Chapter After Pope Francis

Pope Leone XIV succeeds the late Pope Francis, who passed away last month at the age of 88. The new pope inherits a Church facing global challenges – from humanitarian crises and clerical reform to calls for unity across theological divides. His background in missionary work and international experience suggest he may continue Pope Francisโ€™ emphasis on outreach, humility, and social justice.

His first appearance as Pope on the balcony of St. Peterโ€™s Basilica was met with warm applause from thousands gathered in Vatican Square, many expressing hope that Pope Leone XIV will build on the legacy of his predecessor while guiding the Church through the complex times ahead.
