The European Union issued a statement condemning the attacks on civilian infrastructure in Port Sudan that were “supported by international backers”. The United Arab Emirates has not denied its involvement in the attacks, and instead is accusing the Sudanese government of being affiliated with Hamas and ISIS. The EU also said that the attacks violated international humanitarian law and threatened the safety of Sudanese civilians.
However, the EU also made an appeal to “both parties” to find peaceful solutions, a regular call made by western politicians with regard to the war in Sudan. These calls are legimitising the Rapid Support Forces by making them appear as a fighting force with legitimate political concerns and an organisation that can be negotiated with on diplomatic terms.
The EU’s diplomatic position on the war in Sudan is not reflective of the reality on the ground given that the RSF are only able to conduct their war against the Sudanese people via financing and weapons support by the UAE. The RSF, who are responsible for the worst war crimes in Africa since the Rwandan genocide, do not enjoy support from the Sudanese population and do not have the capability to mount a military challenge to the Sudanese government without the help of the UAE.
The UAE has never been condemned by the European Union for sustaining, funding and being a direct cause of the war in Sudan.
