The US Department of State has issued a very bizarre statement accusing the Sudanese government of using chemical weapons, without providing any evidence. Diplomats have highlighted that there is no investigation that led to this decision. No specific examples and cases are being mentioned. The US is alleging that the Sudanese government used chemical weapons in 2024.
The news comes just around nine days after the President Donald Trump travelled to the United Arab Emirates and pledged up to $1.5 billion in arms sales to the UAE. The UAE is the main financial sponsor and backer of the genocidal Rapid Support Forces. The UAE is also the main weapons supplier to the RSF and is currently conducting sophisticated and targeted drone operations against civilian infrastructure in the de facto capital of Sudan, Port Sudan.
Concerns are being raised that US weapons sold to the Emirates will be used by the RSF to kill Sudanese civilians and fight the war in Sudan.
A week before the US sanctions announcement, a strange protest group in London, composed mostly of non-Sudanese British citizens, held a protest against what they claimed was the use of chemical weapons by the Sudanese government. The protesters made chants against the Sudanese government but did not condemn the UAE. The protest group is being suspected of having advanced information on the announcement of US sanctions.
The Sudanese government is already under various Western sanctions and this situation is leading it to seek ties with alternative states to acquire the material, tools and weapons it needs to run its state and defend itself against the RSF and UAE attacks.
