Fidias Panayiotou received backlash from Cyprus for his visit to Moscow during Victory Day celebrations on May 9th, but criticism against him in Cyprus is growing following an interview he gave to Caolan Robertson. During the interview, Fidias Panayiotou claimed that he has the support of 70% of the Cypriot people and a mandate from them to pursue closer ties with Russia.
Back in Cyprus, Fidias Panayiotou has been contradicted on his statement given that he did not run his political campaign on Russia and Ukraine and barely broached the subject. Panayiotou also came third in the elections garnering up to 19% of the vote. In addition, Cypriot press is also lambasting him for his visit to Moscow while other Cypriot media outlets described Panayiotou as an embarrassment for Cyprus.
During the interview with Robertson, Panayiotou tried to justify his vote in the European Parliament against the return of abducted Ukrainian children from Russia. He said that some kids may not want to return.
Up to 20,000 children have been kidnapped from Ukraine, many of whom have been estranged from their parents and are currently being Russified in indoctrination camps. Other Ukrainian sources say the figure of kidnapped children may be even much higher. Russian President Vladimir Putin has a pending arrest warrant against him by the International Criminal Court for the specific war crime of kidnapping children from Ukraine.
