Fidias Panayiotou flew to Moscow to watch Russia’s Victory Day parade after voting against a European Parliament Resolution demanding Russia to return the Ukrainian children it kidnapped from Ukraine back to their homes. The other MEPs who voted against the resolution were Friedrich Purner (independent MEP from Germany) and Petar Volgin (MEP from Bulgaria with The Europe of Sovereign Nations Group). 34 MEPs abstained.
516 MEPs voted in favour of a resolution condemning Russia’s “genocidal strategy” of kidnapping and deporting Ukrainian children to Russia. The resolution also condemns the attempted Russification of Ukraine. The resolution called for the repatriation of the children and for Russia to be held accountable for its actions in accordance with the International Criminal Court, the International Court of Justice and Special tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine. Malta’s MEPs, from both political camps voted in favour of the resolution.
Fidias, the unemployed Youtuber from Cyprus, who was elected Member of the European Parliament last year, is occasionally retweeted and backed online by Elon Musk. Fidias is mostly known for his pro-Russian rhetoric and “criticism” of the European Union: criticism that mostly consists of uninformed or misinformed takes on how the EU functions, such as his claim that the European Parliament holds secret votes. He also regularly echoes Russian propaganda, including false narratives about Russia’s referenda in Ukraine
