Politics is a very serious thing because it affects the lives of people in many ways. Politicians are meant to make our lives and the world we live in better. Given the sensitive nature of the job of a politician, one expects that people elect serious politicians to represent them, but we know that this is not necessarily the case. For example in Malta, we have two MEPs who represent in Europe our collective stupidity and criminal behaviour and these are Alex Agius Saliba and Daniel Attard.
Other nations also have their own collective representative of their stupidity, and Cyprus have Fidias Panayiotou: a twenty-six year-old unemployed clown who got elected to the European Parliament. The description is literal and not rhetorical. Fidias never held a job in his life, except when he was drafted into national service. He then spent years making clownish videos of himself traveling to places like India and Japan, where he was reprimanded by authorities for using public transport for free while filming his videos.
His videos of himself doing foolish things gained him enough popularity in his home country to secure him a seat in the European Parliament. Now, he says he wants to campaign for peace so he voted against the European Parliament’s vote to provide Ukraine with financial assistance from the proceeds of Russian assets – something that a pro-Russian politician would say. Recently, he went to Georgia to oversee the elections as an observer, and according to his video on the topic, the only comment he made about the ruling party’s coup was, “I didn’t like some things I saw.”
He still does ridiculous videos of himself, only that now he has brought his clownish behaviour to the European Parliament embarrassing himself and his colleagues in the process. He’s Europe’s living proof that we Europeans, like our American friends, are also capable of electing dumb clowns with nothing serious to say.
