Norway has announced that it will request a resolution from the United Nations General Assembly, asking the International Court of Justice to issue a legal opinion on Israel’s ban of UNRWA. Earlier this year, the ICJ had ruled that Israel should allow humanitarian aid to be delivered to Palestinians in Gaza.
Malta has condemned Israel’s ban of UNRWA in Palestine which will result in the expulsion of the last humanitarian agency in Palestine that guarantees a basic safety net for Palestinians. Most of the 2 million Palestinians in Gaza rely on UNRWA for survival.
Israel destroyed most of the civilian infrastructure in Gaza causing hunger and a Polio epidemic. Humanitarian aid was also blocked by the IDF as Palestinians starved. Humanitarian agencies were also deliberately targeted by the IDF.
In an official statement, Norway’s, Minister of Foreign Affairs declared that: “‘With this initiative, Norway aims to affirm that no country, including Israel, is exempt from its international legal obligations. We observe similar trends in other countries, where leaders are attempting to undermine international humanitarian law and delivery of assistance in situations of crisis and conflict. This development must be stopped”.
