Opposition leader Bernard Grech has called on the Labour government to hold fresh local elections in Għargħur, claiming the results of the recent council election clearly demand a renewed vote to give residents their rightful say.
PN Mayor Helen Gauci was forced to give up her post as Mayor of Għargħur after a firebrand PN councilor resigned from PN and voted in favour of a motion of confidence against the mayor. The Nationalist Party received up to 63% of the vote in Għargħur’s local council elections.
Speaking at a solidarity rally in the locality, Grech emphasised the Nationalist Party’s longstanding commitment to democracy in Malta, declaring, “The Nationalist Party has always been – and will continue to be—the shield of democracy in our country.”
Grech accused Prime Minister Robert Abela of focusing more on “stealing” the Għargħur local council than on addressing pressing national issues, such as the rising cost of living. “People are struggling while the government plays political games,” Grech argued, stating that the Nationalist Party stands ready to defend democratic principles and provide real solutions to improve citizens’ lives.
The PN leader reiterated that his party will continue to stand up for fairness, transparency, and democratic rights across all localities, starting with Għargħur.
