Government says it will institute proceedings against Christian Borg over his abandoned lions

In a press release issued yesterday afternoon, the government has announced it will be issuing charges against Christian Borg for abandoning his lions. In its statement, the Veterinary Regulation Directorate said that the charges that will be instituted against the individual may lead to fines from €2000 to €65,000 or imprisonment for up to three years, or both, while another charge can lead to fines from €6,000 to €80,000 or imprisonment for up to three years, or both.

The Directorate also said that it considered options and conducted efforts to send the lions abroad. They are now being registered under Maltese law (Legal Notice 43 of 2025).

The lions have been moved to a “zoo” owned by Martin Farrugia.
