Nick Mercieca has made history as the first Maltese athlete to compete in an international Para Powerlifting event. At just 18 years old, Nick represented Malta at the World Para Powerlifting World Cup in Tbilisi, Georgia, on 10 May—marking a significant milestone for both himself and Maltese Paralympic sport.
Competing in the men’s up to 59kg weight category, Nick was one of the youngest participants in the field. He successfully completed three lifts, opening with 90kg and then progressing to 95kg and 100kg on his second and third attempts. His performance earned him 2nd place for best lift and 1st place for total lift in the ‘Next Generation’ category for athletes aged 18 to 20.
The Tbilisi World Cup is the first international event in the new 2025–2028 qualification cycle, which leads up to the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games. The competition saw over 130 athletes from 24 countries, all competing in the bench press discipline across various weight classes. Para Powerlifting brings together athletes with different physical impairments, including spinal cord injuries, spina bifida, amputations, and conditions such as achondroplasia.
Born with spina bifida, which affects his back and both legs, Nick is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health at MCAST. An accomplished multi-sport athlete, he has represented Malta internationally in karate and rowing. He was the first Maltese athlete to earn a black belt in wheelchair karate and also holds world records in indoor rowing.
An impressive performance in Tbilisi
Nick was accompanied in Tbilisi by his coach Matteo Aquilina and the Secretary General of the Malta Paralympic Committee, Dr Julian Bajada. Reflecting on the achievement, Dr Bajada said:
“Nick’s journey in Para Powerlifting has officially begun, and we are excited for what lies ahead. He is now preparing for the Para Powerlifting Junior World Championships in Cairo this October. Despite his young age, Nick has shown a strong understanding of the dedication, sacrifice, and hard work required to succeed at the highest level. We are building a team around him to support his development—and we hope his story inspires others to find courage and push their own limits.”
Nick’s debut marks a proud moment for Malta in the world of Paralympic sport, and his path promises to be one to watch in the years leading up to LA 2028.
