Malta has taken over the Presidency of the Council of Europe from Luxembourg in a handover ceremony presided by the respective foreign affairs ministers, Ian Borg and Xavier Bettel. The summit and handover took place in Luxembourg.
Malta will be using the Presidency of the Council of Europe to advocate for the return of the Ukrainian children that have been abducted and deported to Russia. Malta will be renewing this advocacy from its Presidency of the OSCE.
Malta’s key priorities for its Presidency of the Council are protecting the rights of children, combating violence and upholding human dignity, youth, empowering youth, and safeguarding democracy and the rule of law. You can read the document of Malta’s priorities here.
In his speech at the handover ceremony, Foreign Affairs Minister Ian Borg praised the OSCE for providing “a solid foundation for unity and bold decisions, to preserve our shared values and uphold multilateralism.”
