Metsola calls for bold, united action in vision for a smarter, stronger and safer Europe

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola delivered a compelling keynote speech at the “Europe at the Crossroads” event, urging EU institutions to embrace bold reforms, faster action, and greater unity to shape a “smarter, stronger and safer Europe.”

Declaring that “the time of hypothetical crossroads is over,” Metsola outlined a vision for a more pragmatic and innovative Europe – one that moves beyond excessive regulation and populist rhetoric to focus on competitiveness, collaboration, and citizens’ real expectations.

“We need a Europe that is realistic, self-critical, and supportive of industry,” she said, adding that this demands a shift in mindset, faster legislative responses, and political courage. Metsola also emphasized the need to streamline EU bureaucracy and allow entrepreneurs and researchers the freedom to scale up and innovate.

On trade, she called for deeper ties with the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, stressing that a strong transatlantic alliance remains essential for Europe’s future prosperity and geopolitical stability. “Extraordinary times call for extraordinary moments,” she said.

Touching on defence, the President advocated for smarter, more coordinated investments, asserting that true European security lies in long-term strategies and unity in the face of global instability. She reaffirmed unwavering support for Ukraine, praising recent high-level visits to Kyiv as a show of European solidarity.

Closing on an optimistic note, Metsola called the EU “the greatest political project in history,” urging leaders and citizens alike to believe in Europe’s potential to lead and renew.

“Europe is open for business. For ideas. For new ways to tackle old problems,” she concluded. “That’s how we defy the cynics – and prove we are still a continent on the rise.”
