Deputy-Prime Minister says military neutrality but with a disclaimer: security

In his closing speech at the Labour Party’s Annual General Conference, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ian Borg, stated that the Labour government is actively “upholding and strengthening Malta’s military neutrality while also ensuring Malta’s security”. He made the statement as an example to important and national issues which are actively being discussed by the Labour Party.

Regular readers of The Maltese Herald are by now familiar with the language of the Labour Party, and in the Labour Party’s discourse textbook, “discussion” often means policy change. This is not the first time that the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Ian Borg has stressed on the importance of ensuring Malta’s national security, in contrast to other Labour Party rhetoric that lambasted the ReArm Europe programme.

The Deputy Prime Minister’s statement is being made following an attack on a vessel outside Malta’s coast.
