The Labour Party has just concluded its Annual General Conference in which it passed several amendments to its Statute. There were many amendments, but three amendments are mostly significantly. You can watch the final day of the conference with the closing speeches here.
This year’s Labour Party conference was more focused on internal party matters rather than on policy and public politics. The new amendments and reforms to the Labour Party statute represent the first set of changes introduced by the new Party’s administration, namely Deputy Party Leader Alex Agius Saliba and Labour Party President Alex Sciberras, whose primary role is to lead and manage the Annual General Conference. Most of the reforms presented at this conference are the work of Alex Sciberras.
The Labour Party is to publish a Code of Ethics for its delegates which will also apply to its members in high-ranking government positions. This Code of Ethics hasn’t been published yet and the Labour Party is bound to release it in the coming days. Supposedly, the Code of Ethics will regulate the behaviour of delegates and members in public life.
The measure was originally proposed by the Executive Committee.
The Labour Party also intends to strengthen local committees and has increased the number of members for Local Committees from 7 to 13. The number of delegates and official statutory positions will remain the same. The additional number of committee members has been enacted with the aim to involve even further party members in the local committees.
Another new measure introduced is that Labour Party electoral candidates will receive training and attend educational seminars prior to the elections. The Labour Party has not yet announced any new candidates for the upcoming general election of 2027, unlike the Nationalist Party which is regularly announcing new candidates (more on this tomorrow).
Prime Minister and Labour Party Leader Robert Abela closed the conference with a speech saying that the Labour Party is still proud of being socialist and pledged higher pensions and children’s allowances in the upcoming budget.
There was also the usual authoritarian tirades that the Opposition is betraying the nation while loyal Party subject Yasmin Hamilton said that Malta can only achieve economic growth if Labour is in office.
Apparently, we are all going to die if Labour is not in power.
