Protests continue in Tripoli: Maltese Embassy is still functional

Libyan protests in Tripoli have continued for the third consecutive night with protesters marching to Martyr’s Square and in other locations in front of official government buildings demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh and his government. At least one protester has been reportedly killed in the protests.

The governing council of Misrata has issued statements in support of the Government of National Unity and has called for armed-factions fighting against it to lay down their weapons. Clashes broke out in Tripoli earlier this week between pro-government armed factions and the Rada armed-factions. Several government ministers have reportedly resigned. Protesters are demanding an end to armed-factions in the city of Tripoli and a return to regular authorities with a single army and police.

Up to 38 Maltese nationals have been evacuated from Tripoli to Misrata where they took a plane to Malta. However the Maltese Embassy in Tripoli is still functional and diplomatic staff are also still present.

Reports published yesterday that the Libyan Prime Minister fled to Malta on a private jet were fake.
