Momentum calls for Manoel Island to be reclaimed as public green space in powerful new campaign video

Momentum has stepped up its support for the Manoel Island: Post Għalina campaign with the release of a compelling video urging the Maltese government to reclaim the island for the public. The video, released via Momentum’s Facebook page, argues against private development plans and advocates for Manoel Island to be transformed into a green space free from overdevelopment and traffic congestion.

“Despite MIDI’s glossy visuals, the proposed development will bring more than 1,000 vehicles to the island daily,” said Matthew Agius from Momentum. “At peak times, that’s a car every five seconds crossing into Gżira -adding pressure to already traffic-choked communities. Let’s not forget both major parties, PN and PL, voted to give away Manoel Island.”

The current plan by MIDI includes 323 luxury residences, commercial zones, sports, and hospitality venues. Activists have raised concerns over the project’s potential to disrupt local life and the environment. MIDI’s history of missed deadlines and past restrictions on public access to the island has only intensified skepticism about its long-term intentions.

Momentum continues to collaborate with environmental and civic groups such as Moviment Graffitti and Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar (FAA), reaffirming their joint call for the concession to be revoked and for Manoel Island to remain public land.

Citizens are encouraged to sign the official petition to pressure Parliament into action.
