Ten environmental and heritage organisations have united in a public appeal to challenge the recent approval of a major tourism development on Comino, warning that the project could lead to irreversible damage to one of Malta’s last natural sanctuaries.
The permit in question, PA/04777/20, greenlights the construction of a 140-bed luxury hotel, 16 private villas, and 44 swimming pools on the island. Despite receiving 13,472 public objections, the Planning Authority approved the application, prompting widespread backlash.
The coalition of NGOs – including BirdLife Malta, Din l-Art Ħelwa, Moviment Graffitti, and Friends of the Earth Malta – is now seeking to raise €20,000 to fund a legal appeal. They argue that the project undermines Comino’s status as a nature reserve and violates fundamental environmental safeguards.
“If this decision is not overturned, Comino as we know it will be lost forever,” the group said in a joint statement, highlighting concerns about urbanisation and the erosion of natural habitats.
Supporters can contribute to the campaign titled Together for Comino, through an online donation platform or via bank transfer.
