Another Opposition MP and Nationalist Party member is calling for changes to the Manoel Island project, following a petition signed by more than 29,000 people demanding the return of Manoel Island to the public and its conversion into a public park.
Matk-Anthony Sammut is one of the most vocal and active PN MPs in Parliament and has often issued positions that contrast with the official position of his party. He is calling for his party to change its position over Manoel Island and is proposing to turn it into a “green lung”. Other Nationalist Party MPs who signed the Manoel Island petition include Albert Buttigieg, Claudette Buttigieg, Darren Carabott and Rebekah Borg.
The Prime Minister is insisting that he can not revoke the concession granted to MIDI to develop Manoel Island given it was approved by parliament. He also defended the government’s position saying the concession was granted under a Nationalist administration and that his government is compensating by turning public land into green areas.
Environmentalists and NGOs are urging the Nationalist Party to change its stance over the project. Political parties ADPD and Momentum are both endorsing the petition.
