Moviment Graffitti has called on Opposition Leader Bernard Grech to familiarise himself with the growing public campaign to turn Manoel Island into a national heritage park, after he admitted he had yet to read the petition launched over two months ago.
The petition, now backed by over 29,000 people, is not “a beautiful dream,” the group said, but a realistic proposal rooted in the failure of developer MIDI to meet its obligations under a 25-year-old concession agreement. According to the contract, substantial completion of the project should occur by March 2026 – a deadline that cannot be met under the current pace of development.
The campaign Manoel Island: A Place for Us is calling on the government to honour the contract and renegotiate with MIDI in the public’s best interest.
“We invite Dr. Grech to review the facts and understand why tens of thousands of citizens, over 50 organisations, and numerous political figures are backing this call for Manoel Island to be returned to the public as a park,” the group said.
