Labour lacks confidence in the face of a potential PN Leadership bid by Roberta Metsola

As the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, increased her visits to Malta and appearances in political events by the Nationalist Party, panic soon sparked in the Labour Party prompting rumours that the European Parliament President was set to come to Malta permanently to take on the leadership of the Nationalist Party. These rumours were spread by the usual pro-Labour media.

These rumours were not true and the President of the European Parliament never gave any indication whatsoever that she will be joining the local political fray.

If President Metsolaโ€™s presence alone is enough to cause disruption among the top ranks of the Labour Party, it only serves to highlight how fragile and insecure the partyโ€™s so-called grand majority truly is. The immediate and obvious problem for the Labour Party in terms of optics is that against Roberta Metsola, the Labour Party finds it extremely difficult to project a modernist face.

The Labour Party’s fears are aligned with its control of Joseph Muscat’s faction in the Party which is overriding the main Party’s narrative. Ultimately, the top-rank and file may be realising that Joseph Muscat is the Labour Party’s biggest problem as Labour looms about the prospect of Metsola being its main challenger.

Already, these fears trigger the inevitable conclusion that Joseph Muscat’s faction in the Labour Party is something of the past and that Labour can’t contend with this faction being at the forefront of the party for very long, let alone having Joseph Muscat active in politics. Yet, the Labour Part’s top ranks and the Labour Party Leader still have no solution and lack the courage and determination to root out Joseph Muscat’s influence from the Party.
