ADPD urge government not to criminalise the homeless and street beggars

Mario Mallia of the Green Party, ADPD, has commemorated the Seventh June Riots with a public statement outside the Ministry of Social Affairs in Valletta. In his address, Mallia called on the government to stop criminalising poverty, following recent incidents in which beggars were removed from the streets by police and brought before the courts.

He urged the authorities to address the root causes of homelessness and uphold the social values that the Seventh June Riots symbolise.

Earlier this week up to twelve people were charged in Court for sleeping outside and loitering. Among the people charged include a Maltese woman who was sleeping outside on a bench and more than a couple of foreigners who begged for money outside of commercial establishments.

Street begging is illegal in Malta with laws that date back during Colonial times.
