Council of Europe and President Zelensky sign agreement to establish the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine

Earlier today, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky attended the Council of Europe in Strasbourg and signed for the establishment of the Special Tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine. The tribunal, an initiative by the Council of Europe, will collaborate with the International Criminal Court to bring to justice Russian perpetrators of war crimes in Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has a pending arrest warrant against him by the International Criminal Court over the abduction and kidnapping of up to 100,00 children from Ukraine.

The Council of Europe’s current chair, Malta’s Foreign Minister Ian Borg said that crime of aggression can never go unpunished. Yesterday at the opening ceremony of the Council’s session, Deputy-Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Ian Borg also made a brief reference to Gaza and the ongoing suffering of the Palestinian people.

Malta’s Prime Minister Robert Abela also attended the Council meeting and highlighted the importance of empowering youth which he said was important for the establishment of peace. The Maltese Presidency of the Council has made youth empowerment as one of their top priorities for the Council’s agenda.

EU Commissioner President Ursula von der Leyen also hailed the agreement.

President Zelensky was cheered by attendees and onlookers as he arrived at the Council’s session in Strasbourg.
