US First Lady Melania Trump announced that Russia has returned up to eight Ukrainian children back to their parents thanks to diplomatic efforts and an exchange of information between the US and the Russian governments. The US First Lady said that her mission is to keep facilitating this exchange until all children are returned. She also said that Russia has vowed to return all the Ukrainians who turned eighteen years of age while in Russia.
The First Lady’s initiative follows a letter she sent to Vladimir Putin as President Donald Trump met with Putin in Alaska last August. She has been consistent advocate for Ukraine and President Zelensky has thanked her for her efforts.
Russiaโs President Vladimir Putin and Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova have a pending arrest warrant against them for abducting up to 20,000 children from Ukraine and holding them in Russia, many of whom are sent to military indoctrination camps. A special tribunal in Europe has also been set-up to investigate Russia over these crimes and hold the relevant individuals accountable.
