Putin and Trump cancelled lunch and second round of talks yesterday: Zelensky to travel to Washington on Monday

Various press reports are stating that the meeting with Vladimir Putin and President Donald Trump at Anchorage, Alaska, yesterday was cut short of schedule. After a three hour meeting with their respective delegations President Trump hosted a press conference with President Putin. A scheduled lunch did not take place and neither did the second round of talks which were meant to focus on trade.

Meanwhile, Melania Trump sent a letter to Vladimir Putin urging him to release the children that Russia has kidnapped from Ukraine. Russia has kidnapped up to 100,000 children whom it has separated from their parents and are held in Russia in reeducation camps or handed over to Russian parents for adoption. A website is also available for Russians to scroll through online profiles of children to choose a Ukrainian child for adoption.

First Lady Melania Trump had previously informed President Trump that Putin was striking Ukrainian cities after their phone calls, prompting the President to threaten Russia with additional sanctions. However, the new round of sanctions was postponed until after the meeting in Alaska.

President Trump had earlier vowed to take a tough stance on Russia if Putin refused to halt his war in Ukraine. Yet, following yesterdayโ€™s fruitless meeting, he has not announced any new measures or positions.

Other news sources are stating that nothing was agreed upon during the meeting despite both President Trump and Putin stating they had agreed to a process during the press conference. Other press reports state that Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky is to fly to Washington on Monday for discussions with President Trump.
