The Atlas Youth Athlete of the Month Award for May has been jointly awarded to the Swieqi Phoenix Volleyball U15 team and gymnast Sophie St John, recognising their exceptional performances in their respective sports.
Swieqi Phoenix’s U15 squad continued their dominance in local volleyball, claiming their 10th consecutive national title. Remarkably, the team has remained unbeaten throughout this decade-long run, underlining their consistency, talent, and teamwork over the years.
Meanwhile, 14-year-old gymnast Sophie St John delivered an extraordinary showing at the Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE) held in Andorra. Representing one of the youngest athletes on Team Malta, Sophie won a total of five medals in artistic gymnastics:

Gold in the Women’s Vault.

Gold in the Balance Beam.

Gold in the Team event.

Silver in the All-Around.

Bronze in the Floor Exercise
Her medal haul not only contributed significantly to Malta’s overall success at the GSSE but additionally highlighted her rising potential in the sport.
Outstanding achievements by young athletes duly rewarded
The awards were presented by Matthew von Brockdorff, Managing Director and CEO of Atlas Insurance. The Malta Sports Journalists Association (MSJA) was represented by its President, Clinton Buhagiar.
This monthly award is a joint initiative between Atlas Insurance and the Malta Sports Journalists Association, celebrating outstanding achievements by athletes under the age of 21. Local sports federations and associations are encouraged to submit nominations for deserving young athletes each month.
All monthly winners are automatically considered for the Atlas Youth Athlete of the Year Award.
