The Malta national veterans’ football team delivered a standout performance on Saturday evening, defeating Middlesex Wanderers AFC 5-1 in the Sir Bobby Charlton Memorial Cup, held at the Victor Tedesco Stadium in Ħamrun.
The match served both as a tribute to the legendary English footballer Sir Bobby Charlton and as a charitable initiative in support of organisations such as Puttinu Cares. A spirited crowd gathered to honour Charlton’s legacy and enjoy a competitive yet heartfelt occasion.
Malta started brightly and quickly took control of the game. George Frendo broke the deadlock with a composed finish early on, setting the tone for the evening. Former national team midfielder Kevin Sammut then doubled the lead with a precise strike before producing a moment of brilliance — curling in a stunning free-kick to send Malta into halftime with a 3-0 lead.
Middlesex Wanderers, a respected English touring side with a long history of international fixtures, responded in the second half with a well-taken goal from Sam Deering in the 50th minute. However, any hopes of a comeback were short-lived.
Malta’s veterans regained momentum with Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza finding the net from close range to make it 4-1. The win was sealed when Brian Said, former Malta national team captain, confidently converted a penalty to cap off an impressive display.
