Russian oil-tanker damaged by explosion off the Libyan coast

A Greek-owned oil-tanker loaded with one million barrels of oil called Vilamoura was damaged as its engine room exploded while it was traveling outside the Libyan coast. Bloomberg is reporting that the ship travelled to the Russian port of Ust-Luga before traveling to Libya. The Greek press is reporting that the ship is being towed back to Greece and no environmental damage has been caused.

Although the ship has Valletta written on it, Marine Traffic is designating the ship’s flag from the Marshall Islands. The ship changed its flag and its owners multiple times and is thought to be part of Russia’s shadow-fleet which trades oil illegally.

This is the fifth oil tanker from Russiaโ€™s shadow fleet to suffer an explosion this year.
