Care worker spared jail by UK Court after causing the death of Maltese dementia patient

A care worker from Nigeria, 42 year-old Bilikesu Olagunju, was spared jail by a UK court after causing the death of an 88-year old Maltese dementia-patient with violent abuse. She was charged with ill‑treating or willfully neglecting a person lacking mental capacity under Section 20 of the Criminal Justice and Courts Act 2015.

She plead guilty to her charges and was sentenced to a six-week prison sentence suspended for 18 months and 50 hours of unpaid community service.

Bilikesu Olagunju, worked as a carer for Unique Personnel UK and was recruited by the National Health Service as part of a wide recruitment drive to meet the high demand for medical personnel and health professionals in the UK.

The dementia patient lived in his own home in Bexley, Kent and was called John Attard. The violent incident happened on Christmas Eve of 2022. John Attard was found unresponsive on the following day and subsequently rushed to a hospital with an ambulance. He is survived by five children, 11 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

The Daily Mail published a video from a hidden camera at the residence of John Attard showing the care-worker violently abusing the patient. The hidden camera was placed by John Attard’s own son, Chris, to record the abusive incidents.

His children condemned the sentence and described it as an “insult”.
