UPDATE: Safe to swim again in Qaliet Street, Marsaskala following water quality clearance

Update:

The Environmental Health Directorate within the Superintendence of Public Health has confirmed that the bathing water at Qaliet Street in Marsaskala is now safe for swimming, following a temporary advisory issued earlier this week.

The Directorate announced that the irregularity identified in the drainage system of the nearby public toilet has been resolved. Environmental Health Officers conducted all necessary investigations, and over the past few days, multiple seawater samples were taken and analysed.

Following these tests, results have confirmed that water quality at the site has returned to acceptable levels under the EU Bathing Water Directive. As a result, the swimming restriction has been officially lifted.

The affected site was designated with Site Code A07 Fajtata, located at Triq il-Qaliet, Marsaskala. Warning signs in the area will now be removed.

The Environmental Health Directorate within the Superintendence of Public Health has issued a precautionary notice advising the public to avoid swimming in the Qaliet Street area of Marsaskala, following a suspected overflow of foul water near the public toilets.

In line with the EU Bathing Water Directive, this advisory has been issued due to concerns that the incident may have compromised the bathing water quality, potentially posing a health risk to swimmers. Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) are currently on site conducting investigations to identify the source of the contamination.

At this stage, authorities are unable to confirm how long the advisory will remain in place.

The affected site is identified by Site Code A07 Fajtata, and clear warning signs have been installed in the area to inform the public. Once the water quality is confirmed to be safe, the signs will be removed and a follow-up press release will be issued to declare the area safe for bathing again.
