As Malta and Gozo creep into July with the usual high temperatures, though net yet reaching the heatwave levels of 2023, power cuts are back with a vengeance. This comes despite the regular photo opportunities by Energy and Environment Minister Miriam Dalli, showcasing the upgrading of Enemalta cables and the widespread digging up of the country in the process.
Yesterday, July 4, saw no less than six localities experience blackouts. Marsa, Hamrun, Birkirkara, Qormi, Mฤกarr, and Kirkop saw power cuts with Mฤกarr having a power-cut of up to 9 hours last night. Marsa and Qormi also suffered 4-hour-plus power cuts.
Power cuts of shorter duration were reported in ลปebbuฤก as well as Mqabba, whilst there were also voltage fluctuations reported in Hamrun and Qormi. It looks like another hot, powerless summer ahead.
As demand for air conditioning rises exponentially, so have power cuts. It seems like the problem is one of distribution yet again, as Enemalta announced that they have commenced emergency works in Mellieha, Mriehel (which is close to Qormi and Birkirkara) as well as Hamrun in Triq il Kbira San Guzepp. The latter has only recently endured year-long roadworks but is being dug up again.
