Summer power cuts making a comeback as Malta’s June temperatures reach record yearly highs

Extensive summer power cuts are making a slow return, serving as grim reminders of the 2023 blackouts, which caused more than a dozen of fatalities due to extreme heat. Earlier this week on 9th June, the daily temperature reach a yearly record high with up to 35.6 °C.

Power cuts have been reported today in Sliema and Saint Julian’s. Power cuts were reported yesterday in Sliema, Zabbar and Marsascala. Earlier this week other power cuts were reported in the north of Malta.

Malta’s electricity infrastructure has historically suffered blackouts during excessive heat waves due to distribution issues, faulty wiring and even a temporary lack of electricity.
