Government launches affordable housing scheme with the Church

The Labour government yesterday announced its long-planned affordable housing scheme in partnership with the Church. Led by the government, the newly established Church–State entity, the Foundation for Affordable Accommodation, has launched a scheme that will see the construction of affordable housing units in Ħal Kirkop, Fgura, St Julian’s, and Marsaskala. The scheme was announced by the Prime Minister along with the Archbishop.

Approximately 260 new housing units will be constructed which will be sold at around 30% less than the market rates for individuals earning up to €33,000 and couples earning up to €38,000 per year. 4 separate tenders will be released for each locality.

The housing developments will be built on land previously owned by the Church, which will be transferred to the State as part of a broad agreement between the Church and the government. The deal included, among other conditions, generous state contributions to Church schools. The full terms of the agreement have not been made public.

This is mind boggling. The Church wants to develop to help established employed persons but not the vulnerable and homeless. Isn’t this a clear case of hypocrisy and bigotry?
