Prime Minister Abela flies to Rome for the Ukraine Recovery Conference and talks on Libyan issues

Prime Minister Robert Abela flew to Rome yesterday to attend the Ukraine Recovery Conference 2025. The conference was hosted by the Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni and hosted President Volodomyr Zelensky with his wife Olena Zelenska, and other European leaders including German Chancellor Fredrich Merz and Spanish Premier Pedro Sanchez. President Zelensky was also hosted by the Pope while in Rome.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced up to €10 billion in investments that will be poured from Europe into Ukraine in the coming years, including up to €500 million from the European Flagship Fund for the Reconstruction of Ukraine that will be backed by the European Investment Bank, France, Germany, Italy and Poland. Up 2,000 business represented at the conference and up to 200 agreements were signed between Ukraine and public and private partners that include reconstruction projects and drone production.

During the conference, President Zelensky also met with the US Special Envoy to Ukraine, General Keith Kellogg. The US has just approved new weapons shipments to Ukraine following pressure on President Trump.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Robert Abela, Greek Premier Kyriakos Mitsotakis, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Italian Premeir Giorgia Meloni held a meeting together on the sidelines of the conference to discuss Libya and the recent diplomatic incident in Benghazi. The issue is difficult to untangle as Khalfia Haftar’s rump government in Benghazi is using migration to threaten and blackmail Greece, Italy and the EU over business deals and diplomatic recognition. The issue is also further muddled with a maritime border dispute between Greece and Libya. Prime Minister Abela said that Malta is willing to use its good relations and contacts in Libya to help alleviate the situation.

First but we hope that war will stop

    1. Usually a war stops when one side wins and the other side loses sadly.
