Malta’s offshore racing yacht Artie III delivered another outstanding performance at the 2025 Aegean 600, claiming a well-earned third place in ORC Class 1. Co-skippered by offshore veterans Lee Satariano and Christian Ripard, the team demonstrated experience, resilience, and unity in what was described as “one of the toughest offshore races right from the start.”
The race, known for its scenic but punishing 600-nautical-mile route through the Greek islands, tested the fleet with wildly varying weather — from 50-knot gusts to frustrating calms — combined with scorching heat that challenged both endurance and focus.
Backed by years of experience, including multiple Rolex Middle Sea Race campaigns (Satariano with 16 and Ripard with 34, including wins in 2011 and 2014), Artie III navigated a strong early lead after departing Cape Sounion. However, light and unpredictable winds around Rhodes and along the Turkish coast slowed progress. The notorious Meltemi winds — often a key tactical factor — were not the only hurdle this year, as other islands presented unexpected wind traps.
The passage to Mykonos was among the most demanding stages, with the crew battling gale-force conditions that eventually eased to a steady 30 knots. Despite the elements, Artie III completed the course in 4 days, 8 hours, 56 minutes, and 12 seconds (elapsed time), and a corrected time of 5 days, 9 hours, 42 minutes, and 6 seconds. They placed 10th overall in IRC, 4th in IRC Class Two, and secured a podium finish with 3rd in ORC Class 1.
A team effort by the Artie III crew
Reflecting on the effort, Satariano said:
“As expected, this was a very tough race. The crew had to stay continuously focused to keep the boat moving in light winds, contend with extreme heat, and ensure everyone remained hydrated at all times. It was nice to be on the podium again. The crew worked well together and the result is well deserved.”
He also congratulated the team aboard Gozo Dream for completing their debut in such a challenging edition of the race.
The Artie III crew included Lee Satariano, Christian Ripard, Mathieu Almekinders, Simon De Gent, Koen de Smedt, Nicky Fenech, E.J. Van Housselt, Sam Pizzuto, and Jake Satariano.
The team expressed gratitude to their supporters: Jeep, Elmo Insurance, Manoel Island Yacht Yard, RLR Yachting, and Marina di Valletta.
The Aegean 600, now in its 5th edition, was organized by the Hellenic Offshore Racing Club, in collaboration with Olympic Marine and the Region of Attica.
